Band Story
Apartment is a Chicago-based band that emerged in 1997, known for their unique blend of alternative rock and dark cabaret. Founded by Christine Heinisch and Caila Lipovsky, the band became a significant part of Chicago's queer dark cabaret movement. Their music is characterized by schizoid and absurdist lyrics, combined with off-kilter, quick-change, circus-like arrangements, creating a theatrical and melodramatic experience.
Apartment's lineup included Christine Heinisch on keys, trumpet, and vocals; Caila Lipovsky on vocals; Ariella Lake on guitar; James Wallace on bass; Barry Bennet on drums; and Natalie Nguyen on cello. They released an EP titled "Apartment" on Baxter Records, featuring the original recording of "Pipsqueak," and an album called "The Girl is Not Right." Additionally, they recorded three live CDs from performances at Chicago's Hot House, Double Door, and WZRD.
