Band Story

Gold Tooth Display: Southern Soul Meets Rock Renaissance

Some bands play rock. Gold Tooth Display lives it.

Emerging from the American South with a name that suggests both grit and gleam, Gold Tooth Display is a band defined by its ability to channel tradition while defying convention. Their sound is a potent, magnetic blend of Southern blues, psychedelic rock, funk, and alternative attitude—drawing from legends, but never lingering in anyone’s shadow.

Born officially in 1997 with the release of their debut full-length album MONSTERPIECE, Gold Tooth Display planted their flag with fearless authenticity. The lineup—brothers Bill and John Nudd on vocals and guitars, Ernest McClendon on drums, and Jason Groves on bass—poured heart and fire into a project helmed by producer David Barrick (Glasgow, KY). What emerged was a sonic statement: gritty, groove-driven, and soaked in soul. The album earned modest but meaningful airplay, built a regional buzz, and took the band from Nashville to New York City, where their raw, high-octane live performances began to cultivate a loyal following.

Their influences are proudly worn and tastefully woven—think Lenny Kravitz’s smooth swagger, Soundgarden’s dark elegance, The Black Crowes’ southern slink, King’s X’s harmonic heft, and Urge Overkill’s smirking bravado. But to write Gold Tooth Display off as derivative is to miss the point entirely. This is a band with a distinct voice and vision—one that respects its roots while confidently branching out into uncharted sonic territory.

As time passed and their music evolved, so too did the band. Bassist Jason Groves stepped away, but rather than derail their momentum, the shift opened a new creative chapter. Enter Duane Lundy, a Lexington-based producer whose intuitive understanding of the band not only elevated their sound—but earned him a permanent spot in it. With Lundy now on bass, Gold Tooth Display entered the studio once again and emerged with BLINDFOLD, released in June 2001.

BLINDFOLD marked a matured, more focused incarnation of the band—an album that leaned harder into melody without losing an ounce of its punch. Fans embraced it, not as a departure from the Gold Tooth sound, but as a natural evolution. The road-tested band had honed their craft, their chemistry, and their message.

Today, Gold Tooth Display continues to deliver sweat-soaked, high-energy shows to audiences who appreciate music that’s raw, real, and raised on rock n’ roll. Their blend of bluesy tradition and modern edge is more than a style—it’s a statement.

So crank it up, pour something strong, and stay tuned—because Gold Tooth Display isn’t done yet. Not by a long shot.
