Jeffrey Michael: A Prodigy’s Journey from Piano Keys to National Acclaim
Only in his twenties, composer, pianist, and recording artist Jeffrey Michael has already performed for millions and sold over 250,000 CDs worldwide, all through a self-promotion strategy and his independent record label, Fireheart Music.
Jeffrey grew up in Sterling Heights and Novi, Michigan, where his love for music began almost as soon as he could walk. As a two-year-old, he would bang away at his great-grandmother’s piano—an instrument he wasn’t allowed to touch after her passing in 1983, when the piano was handed down to his mother. Naturally, he disobeyed and started playing by ear at the age of six. By the time he was eleven, he was composing original music.
A true self-taught prodigy, Jeffrey never learned to read music. Instead, he developed a unique shorthand notation system, allowing him to write complex compositions entirely by ear. At age 15, after breaking his right hand and being unable to use it for several months, he focused on developing his left hand—a process that gave him a rare dexterity and skill in two-hand counterpoint melodies that would become his trademark.
That same year, Jeffrey borrowed $1,000 from his father to record a tape of his compositions. Within two weeks, he had paid his father back by selling the tape at his high school. Encouraged by this early success, he created another tape the following year. By the time he graduated, he had sold 5,000 albums, mostly to fellow students.
In 1996, after briefly studying business at Eastern Michigan University and Schoolcraft College, he officially launched Fireheart Music. Under this label, Jeffrey has released and self-promoted seven piano CDs, including:
Inspirations (1996)
Sailing to the Stars (1999)
Winter Spirits (1999)
Reflections (2000)
Kaleidoscope (2002)
After the Storm (2004)
Awakening (2006)
Over the past eight years, he has toured the United States performing in intimate concert settings and has become one of the top art festival musicians in the country. His performance credits include prestigious companies like Fox, Robert Mondavi Wineries, Versace, and The American Cancer Society.
Jeffrey also composes for film, television, and video games, and owns his own recording studio. His compositions have aired on networks such as the Sci-Fi Channel, ABC, Bravo, and Oxygen, and have been licensed for various reality TV shows.
Expanding his artistic reach, Jeffrey is also co-owner of Half Genius Productions, an independent film production company based in Los Angeles. A multi-talented creative, he also plays guitar, writes screenplays, paints, travels, and enjoys sports like fishing, golf, hockey, and soccer—which he once played across Europe.
Jeffrey Michael now resides in Hermosa Beach, California, continuing to evolve as one of the most innovative and independently successful pianists of his generation.
