MARK KERR: BLUESMAN ON A MISSION

From the hills of Tennessee to the heart of Louisiana, Mark Kerr’s journey is the stuff that blues legends are made of. A guitar slinger with soul, heart, and a fire that’s been burning since he was just twelve years old, Kerr isn’t just playing the blues—he is the blues.

While most kids his age were glued to Saturday morning cartoons, Mark was glued to a six-string. He was so committed to his craft, he’d fall asleep at night with his guitar still strapped on. That’s not just dedication—that’s destiny.

And that destiny took him far. Mark’s axe-slinging talent earned him gigs with none other than soul legend Percy Sledge and the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Curtis Mayfield’s Impressions. Thirteen years on the road shaped him into a seasoned performer, but he wasn’t done. Mark took a deep dive into the academic side of music, studying theory at Northwestern State University while sharpening his jazz, blues, and rock chops.

Mark’s breakthrough came with One Drink Away From The Blues—a record that didn’t just catch ears, it turned heads. The album helped earn him a nomination for Musician of the Year by The Academy of Texas Music. That same passion and grit earned him a place in the National Heritage Foundation Blues Hall of Fame, and the title of Louisiana’s very own Ambassador to the Blues.

His music has aired on over 250 radio stations around the globe, breaking into top 25 charts and proving that raw talent still rises—even without a major label behind it. As an independent artist, Mark’s got the accolades to back up the hustle: top 1500 in the 2007 Billboard Songwriting Competition and runner-up in the 2007 Unisong International Songwriting Competition with his soul-stirring track “One Drink Away From The Blues.”

But for Mark Kerr, it’s never been just about the awards. It’s about the message. “I want to continue to be a positive influence in the independent arena,” he says. “And a role model for all independents to see that through hard work, and a positive attitude, most anything can be achieved.”

These days, Mark calls Louisiana home, but his heart still beats for Knoxville, Tennessee—where his daughter Kayla and granddaughter Chelsea reside. And if you’re looking for proof that passion, persistence, and a Stratocaster can still change the world, look no further than Mark Kerr.

The blues are alive—and they’ve got a name.
