Superna

Band Story
Superna is a dynamic, female-fronted progressive rock band originally hailing from Houston, Texas. Pronounced "sue-perna," meaning "otherworldly," the band is renowned for its genre-defying sound that seamlessly blends elements of rock, metal, jazz, Latin, techno, and acoustic music. Their compositions are characterized by complex guitar work, haunting melodies, and emotionally charged vocals that resonate with listeners.
Origins and Evolution
Formed in the early 2000s, Superna quickly made a name for themselves in the Houston music scene. Their debut album, Reflect, garnered critical acclaim and was nominated for Album of the Year by the Houston Press in 2002. Following this success, they released The Ending in 2003 under Solarflare Records, further solidifying their reputation for innovative songwriting and powerful performances. The band also contributed music to a major animated motion picture released in the fall of 2003.
After relocating to California, Superna continued to evolve, performing at iconic venues such as The Whisky A-Go-Go, The Viper Room, and The Knitting Factory. Their live shows are known for their energy and theatricality, captivating audiences across the United States and Japan. In 2005, they were honored with the Rock City News Award for Best Female Fronted Rock Band, followed by the 2006 award for Best Female Frontperson of the Year, and the 2007 LA Music Award for Best Alternative Guitarist.
The Ancient Future
After a period of hiatus, Superna returned in 2016 with their ambitious album, The Ancient Future. This 16-track opus showcases the band's commitment to pushing musical boundaries, featuring a rich tapestry of sounds and styles. Guitarist and producer Nick Midulla utilized over 20 different guitars to craft the album's diverse sonic landscape, while vocalist Melanie Brink's powerful and emotive delivery anchors the project. The album was meticulously produced in Midulla's custom-built studio, reflecting the band's dedication to artistic excellence.
Musical Philosophy
Superna's music delves into the complexities of the human experience, exploring themes of personal growth, societal challenges, and emotional depth. Their lyrics are crafted to provoke thought and invite interpretation, eschewing clichés in favor of authenticity. The band's diverse cultural backgrounds—including Cajun, Italian, Mexican, and Middle Eastern influences—enrich their sound, resulting in a unique fusion that defies easy categorization.
Their work has been featured on Clear Channel's 94.5 FM Houston and is in regular rotation on The Texas Buzz radio show. Superna has also secured licensing and distribution deals internationally, including in Indonesia, and has received endorsements from notable companies like Electro-Voice microphones, alongside bands such as P.O.D., Static X, and Slipknot.
