Steven Jackson: Songs from the Edge of the Abyss
Steven Jackson, a singer-songwriter from Kingston, Ontario, doesn't just write songs—he lives them. For him, songwriting isn’t just a craft; it’s a pilgrimage through the maze of memory, emotion, and existential wonder. “The beauty of songwriting is you never know where it’s going to take you,” he says. “Many roads are explored within the labyrinth of your mind, and many emotions are uncovered.”
This isn’t a man chasing fame or fashion. Jackson writes with a purpose as old as time: to make sense of the chaos. “When so much in life doesn’t make sense, writing songs does,” he says. For him, music is more than expression—it’s immortality. “The music will exist long after I’m gone. I’m leaving something behind.”
Honesty and integrity are his guiding stars. Each song is a soul-baring act, raw and real, unfiltered by trends or pretense. “I strive to write songs that are honest and from the heart,” he explains. “As a songwriter, it’s important for me to bare my soul. I hope and pray my music has integrity.”
There’s a shadow that lingers in much of Jackson’s work: death. It’s a theme that’s haunted him since childhood, shaped by the loss of loved ones and the slow, inescapable march of time. “Death is a constant in my life,” he says. “As you grow older, the reality of it grows closer. I hate the idea of aging and dying, but it’s something you can’t control. Still, that doesn’t mean I’m not going to fight it.”
In his music, the lyrics and melodies hold equal weight. He crafts words not just to be heard, but to be felt—to reach out and make you think. “Lyrics, to me, are a form of poetry,” he says. And perhaps nothing captures his reflective spirit more than this lyric:
"Up above my head there is blue sky, below my feet there is dark. Somewhere in the middle, there is me—lost in thought."
Steven Jackson’s music is an invitation to explore that middle ground with him—between light and shadow, life and loss. Give it a listen. You just might find yourself in it.
